Backstory: For years now, I have had a recurring dream where I’m working in a restaurant. Initially, I’d dream I’d show up for work and not know the table numbers, the menu, and forget my number or card to log into the micro in order to place the orders. Sometimes I’d be waiting tables, sometimes bartending. Typically, it would be very busy and I couldn’t keep up. Lots of times, I would forget I worked there, and I’d think: why do I keep forgetting this? I’d miss shifts because I forgot. I never got fired. Oddly. In fact, most often, managers and coworkers seemed to either not notice or not be angry, which was great. But I’d think they give me too much credit, I can’t even hold my head above water here. Oftentimes, I would realize it had been so long since I’d worked there, that I had no idea what was on the menu, everything would have changed. Eventually, it got to where it wasn’t quite so chaotic. I was doing a little better, like I’d at least remember the table numbers. Now for last night’s dream: Well, last night, I dreamed that I was again working in a restaurant. I happened to be working with one person I used to bartend with, Derek. I was waiting tables. I was new back to working in the restaurant, so they had me stationed in the beginner section, which typically meant fewer tables and fewer sales, so that a new person could ease into everything. I had 3 tables, but one was a big party, like maybe 12-14 people. Plus, my other 2 tables were seated. I got everyone’s orders in and everyone was eating. I realized when I went to the micro to log the orders that I remembered my number to log in, it was my birthday. I thought, why did I never remember that before?! I checked on everyone. The party was doing well. I glanced at drinks. Most were finished with their food, so I didn’t feel the need to refill their drink unless they wanted it. I realized when I used to wait tables (IRL) that I’d always automatically refill the drinks. I always did amazing, but I tried too hard really, I was always so nervous they wouldn’t be happy, I overcompensated and did too much really. This time, I realized I didn’t feel compelled to do that. I asked if anyone needed another drink or dessert. They said they wanted 1 dessert and a bunch of forks. They said that like it amused them they were splitting just one dessert. They were enjoying themselves. Also, a few people wanted a drink, one refill, one juice, and one alcoholic drink. I went to log these in, but then I started getting a bit overwhelmed, and felt a bit rushed or like I was taking too long. But I still remembered my number. The bartender would need to make the alcolohic drink and juice, so I needed to get it logged in. Someone, maybe a manager, asked if I had taken my break. I said I would soon, but I needed to take care of a few things. I was trying to get a moment to log the drink and dessert in the micro. Dereck showed up with about 5-6 different plates of food. He set it on the table in front of me. He said you need to eat. I said I would soon, I needed to take care of a few things first. I was getting nervous; my table would be expecting their drinks soon. I wasn’t in a panic but getting nervous because it was time or just past time to get the drinks to them. Derek said, that’s fine, but please first just take 8 bites of each plate. Before I could say anything, he shoved the first bite in my mouth. I bit it off the spoon before taking the full bite. I was like, it’ll be just a moment, I really need to take care of these things first, then I promise I’ll take a break and eat. Then I woke up. I felt delighted. While I was certainly feeling the anxiety and stress toward the end like I did in old dreams, this one was overall remarkably different. I seemed to have a better handle on things.
Your dream highlights several themes and symbols that reflect your inner state and possibly unresolved emotions related to responsibility, self-esteem, and personal growth.
The setting of working in a restaurant is a metaphor for dealing with various aspects of your life that require balance, service, and multi-tasking. Over the years, as your recurring dreams have evolved, the shifts within the dream scenario suggest your personal progress in managing stress factors and responsibilities more effectively.
Restaurant Setting: Often, restaurants in dreams symbolize an area in your life where you feel you must serve others or meet expectations. It can relate to your professional life or personal roles where you feel accountable.
Forgetfulness and Remembrance: In past dreams, forgetting your login number and feeling unprepared reflects feelings of inadequacy or fear of not living up to expectations. Remembering your number (tied to your birthday) in the recent dream suggests a growing acceptance and realization of your abilities and self-worth, symbolizing a connection to your identity.
Managing Tables: Handling fewer tables in a beginner section, yet having a large party, points to managing significant responsibilities while not getting overwhelmed. It symbolizes growth in confidence and knowing your limits.
Customer Interactions: The interactions were positive and light-hearted, indicating your perceptions of others seeing you as competent and affable, confirming you are on a path to trust yourself without overcompensating.
Bartender Derek and the Food Scene: Derek, an acquaintance from the past, represents a supportive aspect of your personality or a reassuring presence. His insistence on you eating symbolizes self-care and the need to nourish yourself amidst fulfilling responsibilities.
Mixed Feelings of Anxiety and Delight: While the stress kicks back in towards the end, your overall delight upon waking signals transformation and progress. This dream shows growth from being overwhelmed by duties to handling them with more poise and calmness, despite minor setbacks.
This dream, in contrast to previous ones, reflects your personal development journey—coming from a place of anxiety and perceived inadequacy to one of slowly building confidence and recognizing your achievements. There's an emphasis on self-care and balanced responsibilities where you're learning to navigate pressure without overextending yourself. You are prompted to focus on balancing your professional responsibilities with personal well-being, trusting in your capabilities, and embracing the journey rather than the outcome.
The positive shift in this dream could mirror changes happening in your waking life, where you’re finding that sweet spot between striving for success and accepting your limitations. It's a hopeful message that acknowledges your progress and encourages continued self-compassion and self-care.
